Public lecture by Fareen Parvez, assistant professor of sociology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Parvez will seek to challenge the dominant framing of the attacks on the French satirical newspaper, Charlie Hebdo. Rather than presenting the events as questions of free speech and religious satire, she will provide a broader and deeper contextualization of Islam in France that contradicts common stereotypes of "fundamentalist" Muslims. Drawing on her own long-term ethnographic research among working-class religious Muslim women in France, the talk will address their relationship to their faith, education, and to French politics and society.
